a few things

This is a funky quirky hotel.  Each one we have stayed at has had its oddities but this one has a little more personality.  We did not realize how small Porto was.  Only one restaurant open around here and this is about the only hotel open.  The owner of the hotel works from 8 am to 8 pm.  He laughed when Nathan made a comment about being vegetarian on Corsica.  We are the only people at this hotel.  When I asked something about coffee in the morning sometime before 8 am, he found a small water heater.  I told him I had some instant coffee packets.

I have generally not been sleeping well, though the beds have all been comfortable.  It is this different bed each night thing.

I had known that we would be doing a lot of walking for scenery, but I guess I had not realized how much up and down it would be.  On the map, all the towns looked flat except for those stairs in Bonifacio.  But that has not been true.  I guess Ajaccio was flat around the hotel.  Ajaccio is the only place I would call a city, the rest have been towns or villages.

Everywhere the wifi has been great.

We have been enjoying the Corsican red wines.  I guess that they do not export their wines much.  We read somewhere that the rest of France have constantly changed and improved techniques whereas the Coriscan continue to do things the way they always have done them before and so the wines are immature and unsophisticated.  Not that I can tell.

The roads have mostly been good but they are very narrow and curvy.  Many places it is narrow enough that I am glad we were not passing anyone.

Did I mention that people smoke everywhere, stores and restaurants.

Continue Friday March 16

After the beach and the Triu hike we headed on north and got to Cargese where we found a place for lunch.  Nothing was open.  It was 1 pm and I was getting hungry.

We did find a hotel restaurant and ordered a pizza and ice cream. We ordered a vegetable pizza and Nathan was horrified that it came without any cheese.  We asked for some cheese and the waiter brought a bowl of cheese that we could sprinkle on our pizza.  It was good.

It is good that I am comfortable using the natural facilities.  Restrooms are few and far between.

stunning scenery

We researched out a good walk.  Start at the little dog rock.

It took us a while to find it. It said it was an easy 1 hour hike to see the "chateau fort".  It was NOT an easy hike.  But it was well worth it.  Up hill and I am out of breath, down hill and I am noodle kneed.
This is part of the easy part.

The chateau fort - we hiked out to.  Amazing

Porto

We got into Porto and checked into the Hotel Bella Vista.  We were the only guests.  Nothing is open.  I had check on-line and everything that was supposed to be open is not open. One restaurant is open down the street.  We had dinner there.  On thing that is hard to get used to is all the smoking in the restaurants.  I do not like that.

Nathan and George had a salad and a fish dish.  I had a veal stew and fries again.

Friday, 16th

We had breakfast at the hotel in Ajaccio.
cute coke bottles in the breakfast room.

This is the mirror in our room.  Note tiny lit up button lower right over the sink.  If you touch it the bar across the upper part of the mirror lights up.  Very clever system.
We had planned to take a boat in the afternoon but it was canceled due to weather conditions. We decided to make a leisurely drive up along the coast.  Stopping when we felt like stopping.  George Stop, George pull over, George .... Watch out George.  I am sure glad that I was not driving.  We stopped a lot because it was gorgeous scenery.

We all got drenched with this wave.

Ah, the Mediterranean!!

Nathan changed, he still kept getting wet.  We had stopped at a tourist bureau and they recommended the Triu trail
Wow.  Great recommendation.

What a time we are having.  So many pictures so little time.  I will break up today's entry.  We did so much.  Time to go for lunch.
